Guided Walks with Lucy - The Hall Walk

A particular favourite in July, when the trees in full leaf provide shade from the hot sun as well as sudden unexpected viewpoints.

This is a circular classic walk of four miles, taken over a leisurely 2.5 hours.

It includes two ferry crossings, as foot passengers on the vehicle ferry to Bodinnick at the north end of town and returning on the foot ferry from Polruan towards the southern end of Fowey.

Most of this walk gives spectacular views of the River Fowey and Pont Pill, a smaller and quieter tributary.

There are a couple of climbs/descents but much of the walk is roughly level, contouring above the river and Pont Pill.
We pass stone monuments to local war dead and the academic and novelist, Sir Arthur Quiller Couch. At this time of year the wildflowers are moving from spring into full summer, with foxgloves still in flower being joined by lush clouds of umbellifers which often host interesting insects.
Small bridge over river to cottage
We descend to the little bridge at Pont, a former working quay. The once busy crossing and hamlet is now home to water birds rearing their young, herons fishing and the occasional scurrying woodmouse.
Summer sees the arrival of several species of butterfly. Painted Ladies travel from the south, appearing in clouds and happy to rest in any available sunny spot.
The walk on the east side of the river finishes in Polruan, where we wind through tiny streets and alleyways down to the harbour. There’s always plenty to watch in the busy boatyard while waiting to board the foot ferry.
After crossing back to the Fowey side, there’s a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of the narrow streets and vibrant feel of the town. Walking back to the starting point we pass historic and interesting buildings, as well as more recent additions, such as the “Rook with a Book” sculpture celebrating Daphne du Maurier’s close connection with the area.
