St Breward Carnival - July 2019

St Breward had its annual carnival on Saturday 7th July, and this year the scarecrow competition theme was PIRATES!

HM Queen and HRH Prince Philip (perhaps)

St Breward had its annual carnival on Saturday 7th July and this year’s theme was ‘pirates’. Each year the carnival holds a scarecrow competition, which can be enjoyed throughout the village, often outside many of the houses. The key rule is that each scarecrow has to include a percentage of straw in its construction, as you can see. The procession of floats makes its way from the village green to the football field, a distance of around half a mile, where there is a large marquee erected for the occasion. This year it included a bagpipe band, the local silver band, the village Brownies, some classic cars and tractors and the slightly anarchic Cornish Wreckers, and a local Morris dancing group, which managed to find its way to the football club bar so that the dancers could recover from their exertions! The village was fortunate enough to have the Queen and Prince Philip in attendance on mobility scooters – no criticism intended, we believe the Rolls Royce was in for a service!
